Who we are

Column Press is operated by Carrie Fowle, doing business as Column Press. This policy explains what information we collect when you use columnpress.com, how we use it, and your rights regarding it.

Column Press is currently a pre-launch registration site. No articles are being submitted or published, no subscriptions are being sold, and no payments are being collected.

Information we collect

When you create an account, we collect your email address and a password (stored as a secure hash — we never see your password in plain text).

If you complete writer onboarding, we also collect: display name, short biography, personal website URL (optional), profile photo (optional), and your declared writing categories.

We do not collect mailing addresses, payment information, or any other personal data at this stage.

We use Vercel Analytics to collect aggregate site usage data — page views and referrer sources only. Vercel Analytics does not collect personal identifiers and does not set cookies. No cookie consent banner is required.

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to create and manage your account, send transactional emails (account verification, password reset), display your public writer profile at columnpress.com/writers/[your-slug] (writers only), and understand how people use the site through aggregate analytics.

We do not sell your information. We do not share your information with third parties for marketing purposes.

Service providers

We share information only with the following service providers who help us operate the site. Each processes your data only as necessary to provide their service.

• Supabase — database and authentication. Your account credentials and profile data are stored on Supabase-managed servers.
• Resend — transactional email delivery. Your email address is shared with Resend solely to send account-related emails.
• Vercel — web hosting and aggregate analytics. Your requests are routed through Vercel infrastructure. Vercel Analytics receives aggregate, non-personal usage data.
• Sentry — error monitoring. If a technical error occurs, Sentry may receive diagnostic context to help us identify and fix the issue.
• Cloudflare — bot protection on signup forms via Cloudflare Turnstile. Turnstile processes interaction signals to distinguish human users from automated traffic.

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to a valid legal process.

Cookies

We do not use advertising cookies or tracking cookies. Supabase sets a secure, httpOnly session token to keep you logged in — this is strictly necessary for the service to function and does not track you across other websites. Cloudflare Turnstile may set a short-lived functional cookie during the signup verification process.

Data retention

We retain your account information for as long as your account is active. If you request deletion, we will remove your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the address below.

If you are in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, you have additional rights under the GDPR or UK GDPR, including the right to data portability, the right to object to processing, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Our legal basis for processing your data is contract — we process your information because it is necessary to provide the account-based service you signed up for.

If you are a California resident, you have rights under the CCPA including the right to know what personal information we collect and the right to request deletion. We do not sell personal information.

Children

Column Press is not directed at anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe we have done so inadvertently, contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the “Last updated” date when we do. For significant changes, we will notify account holders by email.
